The historic core of Tatev dates back to the 9th century and served as a major medieval university.
Entry to the main monastery complex is free, though donations are customary. The site was heavily damaged in a 1931 earthquake and is currently undergoing restoration through the Tatev Revival project.
As you explore the plateau, you will see structures that housed over 1,000 monks at their peak between 1390 and 1434. Remember that modest dress is required inside the churches.

This is the central and largest church in the complex. It was constructed between 895 and 906 AD and features classical Armenian medieval architecture. Look closely at the eastern walls to spot remnants of original medieval frescoes.

Built in 904 AD, this 8-meter tall octagonal stone pillar features a unique pivot mechanism. The column was designed to tilt as an early warning for earthquakes or approaching armies. You cannot push it yourself, but it remains a 10th-century engineering marvel.
