Visiting Tatev requires a full day of travel from Yerevan. Prepare for a long journey and variable mountain weather.
Getting there
Choose between a guided tour, driving, or public marshrutkas.
| How | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car: Drive from Yerevan via the M2 highway through Goris and either take the cable car from Halidzor or drive the serpentine road to Tatev village. | 4-5 hours | Car rental + fuel | The winding mountain road down the Vorotan Gorge requires cautious driving and may not be suitable for all drivers. |
| Bus: Take a shared minivan (marshrutka) from Yerevan's Southern Bus Station to Goris, then hire a local taxi to the Halidzor cable car station. | 5-6 hours | Around 3000-4000 AMD for marshrutka + 3000 AMD for taxi | Marshrutkas depart when full. This is the most budget-friendly method but usually requires overnighting in Goris. |
| Tour: Book a full-day guided excursion from Yerevan, often combined with stops at Khor Virap, Noravank, and Areni winery. | 12-14 hours | from $46 (group) | Makes for a very long day, but is the most convenient way to see southern Armenia if you are short on time. |

If you plan to drive the winding serpentine road, bring motion sickness medication. Bring a water bottle and local currency (AMD) for donations and local vendors. If you plan to visit the Devil's Bridge natural pools, pack swimwear and a quick-dry towel.
